Pulse of Life, located in the slum of Cazuca, in Bogotá, is a music and environmental program designed for disadvantaged children affected by the Colombian conflict, including those displaced and demobilized. It uses music as a socio-educational tool to improve the quality of life of children living in extreme poverty and violence, amongst other social issues.

Having in mind that young people living in these circumstances face many daily challenges including the ongoing internal conflict, Pulse of Life aims at not only teaching children music but also making them aware of the importance of protecting their environment, thus turning them into agents of transformation and leaders of their communities. This program uses recycled materials found by children in their neighborhoods to make their musical instruments. Psychological well-being, creativity, fun, happiness and motivation are the fundamental pillars used to implement our work.

This music therapy heals trauma and provides the possibility to be creative and express emotion non-verbally. Research done in war-affected countries shows that negative feelings experienced by children changed remarkably after expressive activities such as music, arts, writing and storytelling. Children affected by extreme violence need an outlet through which they can express themselves positively and in a non-violent manner. Using music therapeutically in groups and with individuals can help children explore their difficulties safely and creatively.
